There are many ways for an import export trade professional to earn income. The most common way is to act as a trade intermediary –  connect the buyer and seller and earn a commission on the transaction.

Some additional streams include negotiating shipping and warehousing contracts, representing customers at trade shows and trade fairs, and developing promotional material.

Some trade agents also receive referral commissions for negotiating financial instruments, offering export consulting services, and developing export business and marketing plans. The key is to identify a need, provide the service, collect your fees. Offer excellent customer service in the process so that your clients will call upon you regularly.

Prakash has visited his family many times in India and has developed a relationship with a rug manufacturing company in India. He imported an order of 400 rugs for a regional chain of homegoods stores. He earned a $20 commission on each rug, netting him a profit of $8000.00. I don’t speak another language. Is this a problem?

No. You will find that in many countries, English is the language of the business community. Additionally, with translation software, it is easy to communicate via email between parties where languages are different. The U.S. Commercial services can also offer assistance in this area.

I have never had a business before. Is this difficult to operate?

Not at all. This truly can be a home-based business, with little overhead. Everything about importing and exporting can be learned in our training program. You bring the skills we can’t teach – motivation, drive, ambition, and life experience.

What about time? I work a job and have other responsibilities. Can I start this business part-time?

Absolutely. Another appealing aspect of this business is that it does not require a full-time commitment while you are launching. However, you do need to make some time and be consistent with your schedule. Remember, too, that you are servicing the world! When it is “after hours” in the U.S., it is “normal operating hours” in another country.

Money… you know… I don’t have a lot. Do I have to buy product? Or, have an outlay of cash for “hidden” items?

No – you never HAVE to buy anything unless you want to. In fact, we discourage you from buying product. You may choose to buy samples of product from time to time, but why use your money in the transaction when you can simply put the deal together, have the buyer pay the seller. Then you get paid your commission.
